Green with Enve; limited run Enve spec' XCR Izoard from Spoon Customs
To celebrate their new partnership with Enve (and to help out those people who can suffer from decision paralysis in their full-custom sweet shop) Spoon Customs today launches an ‘off-the-peg’ version of their best selling Izoard XCR available now for pre-order now in strictly limited numbers.
This is Spoon Customs however so there’s very little about this bike that’s stock in the traditional sense, but at least some of the hard work has been done for you. You just have to pick a groupset, wheel depth and colour option and the rest is handled for you.
The colours are Alpine Frost Green seen here, with exposed stainless decals and some really subtle but technical details, such as the gloss pin stripes on the stays and contrast gloss internal fork blades. This is Sam from in-house paint studio Gun Control Paint showing off what’s possible with simple schemes, done flawlessly.
The other colours follow this deliberately traditional looking scheme too in contemporary matte metallics including Hannibal Red reminiscent of the Rosso Fuoco red from the Ferrari F12 TDF but taken from the Iron Oxides which colour the mountains around the Vallee Claree, a Chaberton Pearl white, or Lago Nero Black a deep matte metallic inspired by the water’s of Lago Nero in between Sestriere & Montegenevre where Spoon Customs started.
Unlike some custom steel frames which save the best quality tubing for just one or two tubes in the main frame, every tube on this bike is hand selected and made from Columbus XCR in profiles selected for their ride quality and responsiveness. Spoon have been using this tubing in various configurations since 2014, and have a high degree of confidence in the balance struck between high performance and ride quality.
The immaculate joins on the tubes are tig welded in Northern Italy by long term partner’s and XCR specialists, Cicli Barco, by Alberto. Bosses, bridges and braze ons are finished in expensive silver solder, not brass. Maurizio insists as this keeps temperatures down during fabrication and reduces deformation. Threaded T47 bottom bracket shells keep the cables neat and the frames creak free. Although tolerances on Spoon frames are so high, they have never experienced a creak on their PF30 spec frames, ever.
This is as usual for Spoon, a high performance road bike designed for going fast. The handling geometry retains the same fast and responsive handling geometry that Spoon is known for, tested and developed in the Alps, but custom fitting is included if wanted.
The bike is strictly limited to 12 bikes and each will be numbered, marked with the owners initials and signed, on a laser etched stainless steel plaque, created for this bike.
To cut down on the decision making further, the Spoon Unit 2 Spec XCR is Only available with Enve’s AR bar and SES stem, colour coded with contrast Enve decal on the stem (as shown) and Enve’s SES bar tape.
Wheels are up to you (so long as they are Enve for this bike), with the full choice of Enve SES rims, handbuilt on to Chris King hubs. In your choice of colour of course, with custom decals available on the rims.
Drivetrain options cover most bases that people buying a special bike might want, with SRAM Force AXS or Red, and Ultegra or Dura Ace Di2 12 speed options. Campagnolo SR EPS 12 is also available, but customers looking for the newer version will wait longer.
The bike costs £12490 with Force AXS D2 with power, Enve cages and all the trimmings (in the spec shown here) up to £14390 for SRAM Red AXS with Power. Super Record EPS Wireless (13 Speed) is now available also, for just £300 more.
The bike shown here is not integrated at the front end. Integration is available if you just can’t live with cables, via a 52mm bearing seat. Spoon still prefers the 44mm head tube solution, as the bulkier, heavier hardware associated with internal cables often isn’t necessary, especially if people like to travel with their bike. Servicing is also vastly simplified with external cables, but the cables can be managed inside the head tube if needed with minimal changes.
The particular one - and the super clean colour scheme - was produced for a customer, Mark, who helped design the bike. So taken were the whole team with the clean lines that Mark kindly agreed to let Spoon produce a run of them in the same Enve spec’. There are a few details that are just for Mark in this bike, so the run will have some subtle changes to ensure that the creators bike stands out.
Bikes will be offered on a first come first served basis. To secure yours email andy@spooncustoms.com
